Tennessee Gas Pipeline Seeks Final Approval to Place Remaining Evangeline Pass Expansion Facilities In-service
Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co. requests final in-service authorization from FERC for its Evangeline Pass Expansion Project.
Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company, L.L.C. has filed a request for final authorization from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to place the last segment of its Evangeline Pass Expansion Project into service by May 24, 2025. This request represents the culmination of a multi-year infrastructure effort designed to enhance natural gas transportation capacity across Mississippi and Louisiana, ultimately supplying gas to the Venture Global Plaquemines LNG Terminal.
FERC originally approved the project, authorizing TGP and Southern Natural Gas Company, L.L.C. to construct, acquire, operate, and maintain the Evangeline Pass Expansion Project. The project involves both pipeline and compression facilities and was designed to accommodate up to 1.1 million dekatherms per day of incremental firm transportation service. This service will deliver feed gas from a new interconnect with SNG in Clarke County, Mississippi, to a new interconnect with the Gator Express Pipeline in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana.
Construction began following FERC’s issuance of a letter order on September 8, 2023, which authorized TGP to commence building the project. Since then, TGP has provided monthly reports to FERC demonstrating compliance with Environmental Condition No. 8, outlining ongoing construction and restoration progress. Environmental Condition No. 10 of the order requires that all areas affected by the project be satisfactorily rehabilitated before any segment can be placed into service.
To date, significant progress has been made. TGP initially filed a request on December 6, 2024, later supplemented on December 18, 2024, seeking authorization to place 1,169 feet of the 9.1-mile 36-inch looping pipeline and certain interconnecting facilities into service. FERC granted that request on December 20, 2024, allowing those facilities to begin operating on February 1, 2025. A second request, submitted on April 22, 2025, and supplemented on April 28, 2025, asked FERC to approve the remaining portion of the 9.1-mile pipeline and the associated Compressor Station 529 for in-service status no later than May 1, 2025. That request was approved on April 29, 2025, and the facilities became operational on May 1, 2025.
Now, TGP seeks final approval to place the remaining facilities of the Evangeline Pass Expansion Project into service, specifically the 4-mile loop pipeline segment located in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. This section of pipeline runs adjacent to TGP’s existing 36-inch 500-2 Line and has been built to align with existing rights-of-way where feasible. TGP reports that by May 23, 2025, all major construction activities for the 4-mile loop will be complete. Grading, trenching, lowering-in, and backfilling are substantially done, and clean-up and final restoration activities are expected to reach 80 percent completion by that date. Photographic evidence and detailed descriptions of restoration work have been submitted as Attachment A to TGP’s request, demonstrating the project’s compliance with FERC’s environmental conditions.
The Evangeline Pass Expansion Project is a critical component in the broader strategy to boost U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. By connecting upstream supply in Mississippi to Louisiana’s Plaquemines LNG Terminal, the project enhances the country’s ability to deliver natural gas to global markets. This expansion supports energy security, job creation, and regional economic growth, while leveraging existing infrastructure and rights-of-way to minimize environmental impacts.
TGP’s request for final in-service authorization marks the last regulatory step before the Evangeline Pass Expansion Project becomes fully operational. If approved by FERC as requested, the final facilities will begin transporting gas on May 24, 2025, positioning the project to fulfill its commercial obligations and support long-term energy export goals.
