Texas Eastern Files Appalachia to Market III Project with FERC to Boost Natural Gas Delivery

Texas Eastern Transmission has filed its Appalachia to Market III (A2M III) Project with FERC, aiming to expand and modernize natural gas infrastructure in the Northeast U.S. Building on the success of the original Appalachia to Market and A2M II projects, A2M III includes 2.0 miles of new 36-inch pipeline and compressor station upgrades to support reliable energy delivery ahead of the 2027/2028 winter season.

Texas Eastern Transmission, a subsidiary of Enbridge Inc., has officially filed its Appalachia to Market III (A2M III) Project application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), marking the next phase in a series of strategic infrastructure upgrades aimed at enhancing natural gas transportation from the Appalachian Basin to Northeast U.S. markets.

The A2M III Project proposes construction of approximately 2.0 miles of new 36-inch diameter pipeline, upgrades to the Bedford Compressor Station—increasing total horsepower by 6,500—and retirement of nearly 2 miles of idled 24-inch pipeline. These enhancements will support increased capacity and reliable delivery of natural gas during the 2027/2028 winter heating season.

Building on A2M and A2M II Successes

A2M III builds on the successful completion of the Appalachia to Market (A2M) and Appalachia to Market II (A2M II) projects. The original A2M, approved in 2011, expanded Texas Eastern’s network to transport growing Marcellus and Utica shale gas production to Northeast demand centers. A2M II, approved in 2023, focused on reducing emissions and increasing efficiency by replacing gas-driven compressors with electric-driven units and constructing additional pipeline in Pennsylvania.

Enhancing Energy Infrastructure for the Northeast

By modernizing critical pipeline infrastructure and compressor facilities, the A2M III Project aims to provide firm transportation capacity to serve two local distribution companies. The new pipeline will utilize existing rights-of-way where possible, minimizing environmental impact.

Pending FERC approval, construction is expected to begin in mid-2026, with a target in-service date of November 1, 2027, in advance of peak winter heating demand.
